Waller ISD Board Celebrates Achievements at April Meeting

During the regular meeting of the Waller ISD Board of Trustees held on April 8, the Board recognized Waller ISD staff and students for their outstanding recent accomplishments. The Waller High School Business Professionals of America BPA, presented by Waller High School teacher Becky Meredith, were recognized for their Regional and State qualifiers. The BPA students earned 18 medals and 8 state qualifications at the BPA Regional Leadership Conference. The second recognition was presented by W.C. Schultz Junior High School Principal Bennie Mayes and Waller Junior High School Principal Eric Meldahl to the Do the Write Thing Texas Challenge writing contest finalists from their campuses. Two students from each junior high campus were selected as finalists in the anti-violence writing program. Fields Store Elementary School Principal Claudia Mordecai and PE Teacher Sharron Carpenter presented the Fields Store Elementary School 4th grade student that won the 1st Place Blue Ribbon as the Top Female on the Blue Course of the Champions Challenge Golf Tournament and the only hole in one on the course. The next recognition of the evening was presented by Waller High School Coach Shane Crawford to the Waller High School Girls and Boys Powerlifting Team for their Regional and State qualifiers. The Waller High School Girls and Boys Basketball Teams were presented by Waller High School Coaches Schila Clough and Joseph Earl Claiborne as they were recognized for their All-District 18-4A Honors. The Waller High School Texas High School Rodeo State Finalists and Rodeo Club sponsor Lynn Hinds were recognized. The seven students were recognized that competed at the Bellville Region V Spelling Bee. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Winners were recognized for their artwork, along with their Gold Medals and Best of Show ribbons. The Waller High School students that traveled to Washington, D.C. for a Wreath Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns at the Arlington National Cemetery were recognized with Waller High School teacher Vicki McGuire. Waller High School Coach Brian Ibanez and the Waller High School Wrestling Girls and Boys Teams were recognized for their Regional and State qualifiers. The last recognition of the evening was Fields Store Elementary School teacher Todd Nesloney for being named one of the National School Boards Association’s 20 to Watch honor for 2012-2013. This honor is achieved by education leaders across the country that inspire their colleagues to incorporate technology solutions for high quality learning environments.
 
After the Recognitions, the Consent Agenda was presented by Board President, David Kaminski. Considerations included resignations, employment, leaves of absence, staff transfers, disbursements, budget change requests, tax refunds and reports, staffing requests, and the March 18 Board Meeting Minutes. The consent agenda was approved as amended.

The Regular Agenda items followed after the Consent Agenda. Kaminski asked the Board to consider setting the date to canvass the May 11 Special Election for May 20 at 6 p.m. Waller ISD Superintendent Danny Twardowski asked the Board to consider the Waller ISD May Election Contract with Waller County. Director of Special Programs Jan Oatess asked the Board to consider recommendations for a declaration of a program change. Kaminski asked the Board to consider the Superintendent’s recommendation to propose termination of a term contract. The Regular Agenda was approved as presented.

In Information items, Assistant Superintendent of Finance Mike Marcus presented Catalog Proposals for Awards and Commemorative Products, Special Education Supplies and Equipment, Athletic Supplies and Equipment, and First Aid/Medical Supplies and Equipment. Twardowski discussed the need for a population and demographic study to analyze the district growth in the area. Marcus and Director of Transportation Steve Underhill discussed the need to purchase additional school buses. Assistant Superintendent for Administration Kevin Moran proposed changes to the Student Handbook. Director of Curriculum Kelly Baehren presented the Board with E2020 Edgenuity Virtual Classroom Program information. Important dates are April 29-May 7: Early Voting for Waller ISD Board Election; May 11: Waller ISD Board Election Day and Special Called Board Meeting to receive unofficial Trustee results; May 13: Regular Called Board Meeting; May 16: Senior Awards Night; May 18: Waller High School Prom; May 20: Canvass of the May 11 Special Election; May 27: Memorial Day holiday; June 5: Last Day of School and Student Early Release Day; June 8: Graduation Day.
